On the Allen & Heath Qu, use Plate Reverb as the primary vocal effect and Hall Large as a quieter secondary effect. High-pass both at 250 Hz, low-pass them at 3 kHz. Levels must be set by ear during rehearsal so the reverb blends without weakening vocal clarity.

Most church vocals do not sound bad. They sound dry and lifeless.
You can work through EQ and compression correctly and still feel like something is missing. In many cases, the missing piece is reverb.
The useful range is narrow. Too little reverb leaves the vocal disconnected from the music. Too much makes it sound hollow, unfocused, and washed out.
The goal is to add enough life and space that you miss the effect when it is gone, but not so much that you hear an obvious wash around every word.
On the Allen & Heath Qu, you can build that sound with two complementary reverbs: a plate as the primary effect and a large hall as the secondary effect.
This assumes you have already applied our basic vocal EQ strategy. Reverb will not fix a vocal that needs foundational EQ work.
The Qu has six stereo effect slots, but you only need two of them for this vocal setup.
Load Plate Reverb into Effects 1. This is the primary vocal reverb. It has a bright, lively character that adds presence to the vocals and can sound good on its own.
Load Hall Large into Effects 2. This is the secondary vocal reverb. It sounds warmer, creates a greater sense of space, and has a longer trail.
Start by setting up the plate:
Next, open the PEQ for Effects 1. Select the low filter, change it to a high-pass filter, and set the frequency to 250 Hz. Then select the high filter, change it to a low-pass filter, and set it to 3 kHz.
These filters carve unnecessary lows and highs out of the reverb itself, keeping the effect clean and pleasant.
Now create the hall reverb:
Once both reverbs are loaded, make sure the send masters and returns are set properly. This gives you a predictable starting point before you adjust the amount sent from each vocal channel.
Navigate to Layer C and set the Effects 1 Send and Effects 2 Send master faders to 0 dB. This keeps the overall reverb level from being cut or boosted at the send master.
Next, select the LR mix, return to Layer C, and set the Effects 1 Return and Effects 2 Return to 0 dB. Both reverbs are now feeding the main mix at unity, ready to be balanced from the individual vocal sends.
Do not choose the final vocal send levels by looking for a universal number. Set them by listening while the full band is playing.
That context matters because reverb that sounds obvious on an isolated vocal may sit correctly once the entire mix is present.
Keep the hall reverb approximately 5–10 dB lower than the plate. The hall creates warmth and space, but its longer trail can make the vocal unclear very quickly. The plate should remain the more prominent of the two effects.
Turn the reverb up until you notice it, then back it down until it blends in.
That listening method usually creates a vocal that feels full and alive without sounding hollow or swimming.
If the vocal begins to feel distant, unfocused, or surrounded by an obvious wash, the reverb is too loud. Check the hall first because it is especially easy to overuse.
Your other vocals need reverb as well. Once the lead vocal is balanced, copy its plate and hall send levels to the other vocal channels. The same levels should provide a useful starting point across the vocal team.
When rehearsal time allows, listen to each vocal individually and fine-tune those sends. The first priority is establishing a consistent starting point. Individual adjustment comes after the basic relationship between the plate and hall is working.
You do not want reverb on a talking voice. Assigning both effect sends to a DCA gives the operator one fader for smoothly turning the vocal reverbs down during spoken moments and restoring them when singing begins.
The corresponding DCA fader now controls the master volume of both vocal effect sends. Pull it down when someone is talking, then return it to its normal position for singing.
Use this control carefully. The DCA adds another layer of volume control, and it is easy to forget about it.
If the reverbs suddenly cannot be heard, check the DCA before changing effect settings or routing.
Instruments can benefit from hall reverb too. Use the same hall-style approach, but place it on a separate effects channel.
That keeps instrument reverb independent from the vocal hall, allowing you to adjust one without disturbing the other.
Your live stream also needs the reverbs. Send the reverb returns to the live-stream mix, then adjust their return levels on the live-stream bus.
Do not assume the balance that works in the room will automatically work online. Adding reverb to your live stream mix requires a separate listening pass because its balance will likely differ from the main mix.
