Most church vocals do not sound bad, they just do not cut through.

Turning the vocal up does not always solve that problem. If the vocal is carrying unnecessary low end, too much weight in the lower mids, or a harsh frequency that jumps out when the singer leans in, it will keep competing with the band instead of sitting clearly on top of it.

EQ is what creates that space.

The goal is not to make an impressive-looking EQ curve or strip all the character out of a singer’s voice. The goal is to clean up what is getting in the way so the vocal stays natural, warm, and clear in the full mix.

On the Allen & Heath Qu, I start with three simple tools: a high-pass filter, an optional low shelf, and a peaking filter.

Make these adjustments while the vocalist is singing and listen for the point where the problem is gone. That is how you know when to stop.

Start by Removing Unnecessary Low End

One of the biggest reasons a vocal will not sit in a church mix is low-end buildup.

A vocal mic picks up unnecessary low frequencies from the stage, and that buildup makes the whole mix feel muddy. The vocal may have plenty of volume, but it will still lack clarity because it is fighting the low end of the band.

Use the high-pass filter on the vocal channel to remove that unnecessary low end. A useful range is between 120 and 180 Hz. Bring the filter up and listen carefully as the low end cleans up.

You are listening for a specific balance: the mud should disappear, but the vocal should still have warmth.

If you keep pushing the high-pass filter past that point, the voice starts to get thin. Do not keep going just because more low end is disappearing.

Stop when the vocal sounds cleaner without losing its natural fullness.

Use a Low Shelf Only When the Vocal Still Feels Heavy

A high-pass filter handles the unnecessary bottom end, but some vocals can still feel muddy or boomy afterward. The low end is technically cleaner, yet the voice still carries too much weight in the lower mids.

That is where a low shelf can help.

This is not a move every singer needs. In fact, it is easy to overdo. If you cut too much with the shelf, the vocal loses warmth and starts to sound hollow.

When I use a low shelf, I set it around 900 Hz and cut only as much as it takes to clean up the vocal. Make a small cut, listen in the mix, and stop as soon as the extra weight is gone.

Clarity is the target—not a thin vocal.

Find Nasal or Muddy Midrange With a Peaking Filter

After you have cleaned up the low end, listen again. A vocal can still sound nasal or muddy in the mids even when nothing seems obviously wrong.

Rather than guessing at a frequency, use a peaking filter and sweep for the problem.

Nasal frequencies commonly land between 400 and 700 Hz. Here is the process:

  • Activate a peaking filter on the vocal channel.
  • Set the gain to +9 dB.
  • Set the Q value to 4.
  • While the vocalist is singing, slowly sweep through the frequency range.
  • Listen for the spot where the unpleasant nasal or muddy quality becomes especially obvious.
  • Once you find it, use the EQ gain control to cut that frequency until the vocal sounds right again.

The temporary boost is not the finished EQ setting. It is simply a way to make the offending frequency easy to hear.

When it jumps out, you have found the area that needs attention. Then replace the boost with a cut and let your ears determine how far to go.

A lot of vocals benefit from a cut in this area, but not every vocal does.

The EQ curve is not the goal. The sound of the vocal in the mix is what matters.

Tame Harshness Between 2 and 4 kHz

Once the nasal quality is gone, another issue can reveal itself: harshness in the 2 to 4 kHz range.

These frequencies can feel sharp, fatiguing, and almost painful when a vocalist sings with more intensity.

Use the same peaking-filter sweep technique here. Boost the narrow band temporarily, sweep through the 2 to 4 kHz area while the singer is really singing, and identify the spot that makes the harshness stand out. Then cut that frequency gently until the sharp edge settles down.

Do not assume every vocal needs this cut. If the vocal is already clear and comfortable, leave it alone. But when a singer starts sounding aggressive or painful on stronger notes, this range is a useful place to listen.

Train Your Ear to Know When to Stop

The biggest mistake with vocal EQ is continuing to adjust after you have already solved the problem.

A high-pass filter can make a vocal thin. A low shelf can make it hollow. Too much cutting with a peaking filter can remove the character that makes the singer sound natural.

Work through the vocal in order: clean up unnecessary low end first, use the low shelf only if the vocal remains too heavy, then sweep for specific midrange or harsh-frequency problems.

After each adjustment, listen to the vocal with the band—not just by itself. You are trying to help it float above the mix without sounding unnatural.

This same approach works on instruments too, with slight variations. Instead of guessing at frequencies, identify what is getting in the way, sweep to confirm where it is, and make only the adjustment the source actually needs.

Once the vocal tone is in a good place, vocal compression can help control the changing level of the performance.
