
Most church vocals do not sound bad. They just sound dry and lifeless.
You can get the EQ and compression right and still feel like the vocals are missing something. In many cases, the problem is reverb. Too little makes the vocal feel disconnected from the music, while too much makes it hollow, distant, and difficult to understand.
For a full, clear church vocal sound on the Allen & Heath Qu, use a plate reverb as your primary effect and a large hall as a quieter secondary effect. High-pass both reverbs at 250 Hz, low-pass them at 3 kHz, and keep the hall approximately 5 to 10 dB lower than the plate.
That combination gives the vocal brightness, presence, warmth, and space without sacrificing clarity.

The Allen & Heath Qu gives you six stereo effect slots, but you only need two of them to build a great vocal sound:
FX 1: Plate Reverb (Primary vocal reverb that adds brightness, life, and presence)
FX 2: Hall Large (Secondary reverb that adds warmth, depth, and a longer decay)
The plate should do most of the work. It helps the vocal feel polished and energetic without pushing it too far into the background.
The large hall is the finishing touch. It creates a greater sense of space and gives the vocal a warmer trail, but it should sit noticeably lower than the plate because it can quickly reduce clarity.
Start by creating the primary vocal reverb in the first effect slot.
This plate reverb will be the foundation of the vocal effects. It should add presence and energy while remaining subtle enough that the congregation hears a great vocal rather than an obvious effect.
Reverb can introduce unnecessary low-frequency buildup and harsh high-frequency reflections. Filtering the reverb return keeps it cleaner and prevents it from competing with the vocal.
Under FX 1, open the PEQ and use these settings:
High-pass filter: 250 Hz
Low-pass filter: 3 kHz
The 250 Hz high-pass filter removes low-frequency energy that can make the mix muddy. The 3 kHz low-pass filter softens the top end so the reverb sounds smooth instead of bright, sharp, or distracting.
Next, create the secondary vocal reverb.
The large hall should sound warmer and more spacious than the plate. Its longer decay fills out the vocal and helps it sit naturally within the rest of the music.
Use the same 250 Hz high-pass filter and 3 kHz low-pass filter on this effect. Keeping both reverbs filtered gives you a cleaner mix and allows the dry vocal to remain intelligible.
Once the reverbs are loaded, make sure the sends and returns are routed at unity gain before you begin balancing individual vocal channels.
Navigate to Layer C and set the FX 1 Send and FX 2 Send master faders to 0 dB. This prevents the overall reverb send from being unintentionally cut or boosted.
Next, select the LR mix, return to Layer C, and set the FX 1 Return and FX 2 Return faders to 0 dB. This sends both reverb returns into the main mix at unity gain.
At this point, the effects are properly configured and ready to be blended into the vocals.
There is no single fader level that works in every room, with every singer, and for every song. The most reliable method is to listen for the point where the reverb becomes noticeable, then back it down until it blends into the mix.
During rehearsal:
As a starting relationship, keep the hall reverb approximately 5 to 10 dB lower than the plate reverb. The hall creates more space and has a longer trail, so too much of it can make the lead vocal sound distant and unfocused.
The goal is not to hear reverb as a separate element. The vocal should simply feel fuller, smoother, and more alive.
Too much reverb makes vocals sound hollow, unfocused, or far away. It can also blur consonants, reduce lyric intelligibility, and make the entire mix feel less defined.
If you can clearly hear the reverb tail throughout the song, especially while the full band is playing, it is probably too loud. Pull it back until you miss it when it is muted but do not consciously notice it while it is active.
A simple rule will get you close every time: Turn the reverb up until you notice it, then back it down until it blends in.
Once the lead vocal is balanced, copy those plate and hall send levels to the other vocal channels. The same starting point will often work well across the entire team.
When time allows, listen to each vocalist individually and fine-tune the sends. Differences in vocal tone, microphone technique, and performance style may cause one singer to need slightly more or less reverb than another.
You normally do not want vocal reverb on spoken moments. A DCA gives the sound operator one fader that can smoothly turn both reverbs down during talking and bring them back for singing.
To create the DCA:
The corresponding DCA now controls the master send level for both vocal reverbs. Pull it down during speaking and return it to its normal position when the singing begins.
Remember that the DCA adds another layer of volume control. If your reverbs suddenly disappear, check the DCA before changing your effect sends or routing.
Instruments can benefit from hall reverb as well. A small amount can help the band feel like it exists within the same space rather than sounding like a collection of disconnected channels.
For the most control, place the instrument hall on a separate effect slot instead of sharing the vocal hall. This lets you adjust the instrument and vocal reverbs independently without changing the balance you already established.
Your live stream mix needs vocal reverb too. Without it, vocals that sound natural in the room may feel unusually dry and isolated online.
Send both reverb returns to the live stream bus, then adjust their return levels while listening to the stream mix. Do not assume the same balance used in the room will translate perfectly because the room adds natural ambience that online listeners never hear.
The live stream may need more reverb than the in-room mix, but the same principle still applies. Raise it until it becomes noticeable, then lower it until it blends.

These settings are a strong starting point, not a rigid formula. The final levels should always be adjusted during rehearsal with the full band playing.
