How to Mix Church Vocals in 5 Simple Steps

Vocals are the most important part of your mix, especially the lead vocal. If people in the room cannot hear the words well enough to follow along, it does not matter how good the instruments sound.

Start with these five steps every rehearsal, and you will have a simple, repeatable way to get vocals clear, natural, and controlled.

1. Start with Microphone Placement

Before you touch the console, look at how the vocalist is using the microphone. If they are not holding it correctly, there is only so much you can fix from the sound booth—and it will never be as good as it could have been.

Give vocalists two clear instructions:

  • Keep the microphone no more than one inch from your mouth while singing.
  • Never cover the windscreen with your hand.

Close microphone placement gives you a full vocal sound. Be willing to remind a vocalist again, even if you told them 30 seconds ago. Keep doing it until it becomes a habit.

This small correction makes every processing decision that follows easier.

2. Set Vocal Gain at the Beginning of Rehearsal

Gain is at the top of the signal chain, so it affects everything else you do on the mixer. Get it right first.

While the vocalist is singing, adjust the gain until the channel meter consistently reaches the point where the green lights meet the yellow lights.

On a Behringer X32, that is around the -18dB mark. On other mixers, that same transition may be labeled 0dB.

The meter will sometimes go further into yellow during louder moments, and that is fine. The goal is for the average level to live around that green-to-yellow transition.

Do Not Use Gain as Volume Control

The channel fader does not determine whether gain is correct. You can set gain with the channel muted, too, because the fader and mute button do not affect the gain setting.

Gain happens at the beginning of the signal chain; the fader and mute are at the end.

Set gain at the beginning of every rehearsal instead of assuming last week’s setting is still right. Vocalists change, confidence changes, microphone technique changes, and a singer may be much louder or quieter than before.

3. Use a Low Cut Filter on Every Vocal

When a vocalist keeps the microphone close to their mouth, the vocal gets a nice full sound—but it can also pick up too much low-frequency energy. That extra low end makes the vocal muddy and competes with instruments that belong in that range.

Turn on a low cut filter for every vocal channel. Your mixer may call it a high-pass filter; it is the same thing. Set it somewhere between 120 and 180Hz.

Bring the filter up until the vocal cleans up, then stop before the voice becomes thin.

You are removing unnecessary low-frequency noise while keeping the natural fullness that comes from good microphone placement.

4. Clean Up Remaining Problems With Frequency Sweeping

After the low cut filter, a vocal may still have something about it that does not sound right. You may not immediately know which frequency is causing the issue.

Frequency sweeping gives you a simple way to find it.

On the vocal channel, activate a peaking EQ filter, often labeled PEQ. While the vocalist is singing, use these temporary settings:

  • Set the filter gain to +9 dB
  • Set the Q value to 4
  • Slowly sweep through the full frequency spectrum

As you sweep, listen for the point where the problem becomes obvious. That might be the frequency that makes the vocal sound especially unpleasant or exaggerated.

Once you find it, use that filter’s gain control to cut the problem frequency until the vocal sounds right.

The boost is only there to help you identify the problem area. Do not leave the filter boosted after you find it. Use the sweep to locate the issue, then make a cut until you get the desired result.

5. Control Vocal Dynamics with Compression

Vocals naturally have a wide dynamic range. A singer may be quiet in one moment and belt in the next. Compression narrows that range enough to make the vocal manageable, so you can keep it at the front of the mix without a powerful note making everyone cover their ears.

Dynamic range is still a good thing, so do not try to eliminate it. The goal is control, not a flat or lifeless vocal.

Use These Starting Compressor Settings

Turn the compressor on, then start each vocal with these settings:

  • Ratio: 3:1
  • Attack: around 10 ms
  • Hold: 0, if your mixer offers it
  • Release: around 50 ms
  • Gain: +6 dB

These settings can remain the same from vocal to vocal. The setting you need to dial in for each individual singer is the threshold.

Set Threshold During Full-Band Rehearsal

Set the threshold while the vocalist is really singing out with the band. Do not have them sing by themselves for this.

A vocalist usually will not sing the same way alone as they will when the band is playing, especially in the louder sections of a song.

Watch the compressor’s gain-reduction meter while they sing. Adjust the threshold until the meter reads around -6 dB on their loudest moments.

During quieter phrases, the meter may not show any gain reduction at all. That is okay. The compressor does not need to be working all the time.

If you compress much more than 6 dB, the vocal can start to sound smashed and lifeless. So, if the vocal loses its shine, check the compressor first.

A singer may become more confident over time, or a different person may start using the microphone. When that happens, adjust the input gain first, then reset the compressor threshold so the loudest moments are not being compressed by more than about 6dB.

Keep the Process in Order

Work through the vocal in this order: microphone placement, gain, low cut filter, corrective EQ, and compression. Each step supports the next one.

A close, properly held microphone gives you the source you need. Correct gain gives the channel a healthy starting level. The low cut removes unnecessary low-frequency buildup, frequency sweeping resolves remaining tonal problems, and compression keeps the vocal consistently manageable in the mix.

Do these steps enough times during rehearsal, and they will become second nature.
