With the Arturia Astrolab, you’ll get great keyboard sounds the easy way.
Our sponsor, Sweetwater, sent me this amazing piece of gear.
The Astrolab has already done the heavy lifting for you by re-creating the most popular keyboard sounds. A quick search through the preset library and you’re ready to play.
It’s even easy to customize the presets to your liking with a few simple controls.
Watch the video for a complete review and sound examples.
PRO: Weighting 💯
The keys on the Astrolab are semi-weighted, giving you close to the feel of a regular piano. It provides immediate feedback from the moment you press the key, and when you release. This also allows for more expression in your playing. If you come from playing an acoustic piano, then you’ll recognize the hammer-like feel that this keyboard offers.
PRO: Customization
With hundreds of sound presets pre-installed, as well as the built-in FX and EQ, the Astrolab gives you complete control over every preset in its library. Classic synthesizer players will enjoy the customizable options the Astrolab brings to the table.
PRO: Digital Display and Quick Access
Every digital keyboard comes with quick access buttons to get you to the presets you’re looking for, but the Astrolab has a digital interface and scroll wheel that not only feels nostalgic, but lets you move to your favorite preset with ease.
PRO: Premium Look and Feel
The Astrolab is heavy! But what is nice about that is you know that you are getting a premium product that is built to last. The white metal body with the wood grain accents give this keyboard a premium, yet classic look that I am a fan of.
Now, not everything about the Astrolab is perfect. Here are a few cons we found while using the keyboard.
CON: Slow CPU
The interface with the Astrolab is wonderful, but what this keyboard needs is a bit more processing power. Changing to different presets in your library takes a few seconds to load. This may be great for a studio, but if you plan to use this keyboard live, then don’t expect to switch presets very often, or you’ll be waiting for the preset to load, and in a live situation, every second counts!
CON: Pay to Play
You can download thousands of presets and effects from the Arturia website, but unfortunately, they each cost a small chunk of change.
To take full advantage, you’ll need a PC or Mac to get the presets to the Astrolab. The Astrolab does come pre-loaded with a good number of presets, but not every preset Astrolab offers is included.
The Astrolab is a great keyboard with great sounds and functionality.
